4 Step System to Makeover Your Wardrobe on a Budget

Ever feel like you want to completely overhaul your wardrobe, but it’s just not in the budget?

Well frugal friends, we may not be able to afford a shopping spree at the mall right now, but we can find simple ways to overhaul our closets on a budget.

Ever feel like you want to overhaul your wardrobe, but it's just not in the budget? Try this easy 4 step system to get a wardrobe makeover on a budget.

Ever feel like you want to overhaul your wardrobe, but it's just not in the budget? Try this easy 4 step system to get a wardrobe makeover on a budget.

Here is my 4 step system for a wardrobe makeover on a budget!

  1. Clean out and organize your closet.

The best way to figure out what you need is to clean out your closet and declutter.

  • Get rid of anything and everything that is damaged beyond repair, doesn’t fit or doesn’t fit well, is outdated, faded, worn out, and anything that you just don’t love.
  • Sort everything and make sections so you can easily find what you are looking for.
  • Arrange everything by color so you know what colors you love, have plenty of, and would like more of.

2. Make a budget.

You have to make a budget for this wardrobe makeover, or you will likely go way overboard, not knowing how much you can spend.

Write down your monthly income, subtract all of your bills, set some money aside for savings, groceries, gas, etc, and make yourself a clothing budget.

It may not be much, but at least you know how much you can realistically spend without going broke.

If your clothing budget is very small, you may want to set the money aside each month, and wait till you have a larger amount to shop with. You can usually get discounts or free shipping if you order more at once rather than shopping every month!

If you have nothing left for a clothing budget, but are dying to makeover your wardrobe, try getting a side job so you can afford extras like this.

Ok, here comes the fun part…

3. Order a box from Stitch Fix.*

But do not do this until you have cleaned out your closet AND made a clothing budget.

After you clean out your closet, you will have some idea of what you need and are looking for in your wardrobe update.

When you sign up for Stitch Fix, fill out your style profile in detail. The profile will ask your size, style preferences, how you like things to fit, your budget (choose the lowest budget), and what you are looking for. The more detail you add, the better box you will receive since your stylist will have an idea of your style and needs.

Your stylist will hand pick 5 items for you, ship your box to you, and then you get to try everything on at home.

When you get your box, try on everything, even if you don’t think you will like something. You might surprise yourself and find something you really love! Keep what you love and can afford (do not blow your budget!!), and send the rest back.

The Stitch Fix box will cost $20 upfront, and if you buy anything from the box, your $20 will be a credit towards your purchase.

I recommend getting a Stitch Fix box so you can try things you wouldn’t normally try, and to get high-quality staple pieces that will last a long time. Much better than a closet full of cheap clothes than only last a couple of wears!

For the rest of your wardrobe makeover on a budget…

4. Order basics and trendy pieces from thredUP.*

Make a list of items you would really like to have and items that need to be replaced. Search for those on the thredUP site.

thredUP is an online secondhand shopping site with seriously great deals. You can find anything and everything on their site at HUGE discounts.

I’m usually not a big fan of secondhand clothes, but they inspect all of the items, and package them really nice. No shopping through racks and racks at thrift stores!

The thredUP website is very easy to search and navigate. You can search by size, style, price, brand, or whatever you are looking for.

If you sign up for their emails, they will often email discount codes!

You may not be able to order everything on your list the first go around.

Keep a running list of items you would love to have, and when you have money in the budget, you will know exactly what you are looking for.

Sticking to a budget and getting a wardrobe makeover is definitely possible if you use this 4 step system.

Just clean out your closet to find what you need, make a budget, order a fun box from Stitch Fix for great staple pieces, and then order basics and trendy pieces at a great discount from thredUP.

Have fun!! And stay on budget!! 😉
