Is your entryway or mud room cluttered with dirty boots and shoes?

We work outside a lot, and our boots get really dirty. Our house is very small, and we don’t have a mud room. So, our shoes pile up at the back door and we tend to track in a lot of dirt and mud.

Not ideal.

One day, my husband said we need a boot tray. A what? I had never heard of such a thing. Sounds good though, honey! 🙂

I stared at our dirty boots for a few more weeks, then googled “boot tray”. There is such a thing after all!

Naturally, I gawked at the prices they were charging and found some ideas to make my own DIY rolling boot tray.

The boot tray turned out really well, and I’m happy to report our dirty boots have their own little space now.

DIY Rolling Boot Tray

I’m really excited with how this DIY boot tray turned out.

I saw some ideas for boot trays with rocks in the bottom to catch dirt, but I knew those rocks would be all over our house. So, I knew we needed a flat bottom.

The casters are totally optional. I bought casters with brakes, so we can lock it in place, or move it around if we want to. Mostly, I just like the look of the casters and having the tray off the floor.

Materials List:

3/4″ thick pine wood measuring 16″ X 24″
2 – 1″ X 4″ X 14.5″ pine wood
2 – 1″ X 4″ X 24″ pine wood
4 swivel casters with brakes and 1/2″ screws – I got mine from Home Depot, but this is a better deal on Amazon.
2 handles with screws – I got mine from Home Depot, but these are the exact same for the same price.
Wood glue – This is my favorite kind
Stain – I used MinWax Dark Walnut

Directions to make your own DIY Rolling Boot Tray:

Cut.

I bought a 16″ X 4′ piece of pine, and a 1″ X 4″ X 8″ to make this tray, giving me some leftover scrap wood.

Here’s the cuts you need to make:

Bottom piece – 16″ X 24″ (3/4″ pine wood)

Side pieces – 2 cut 14.5″ length (1″ X 4″), 2 cut 24″ length (1″ X 4″)

*You can make your boot tray whatever size you want. This size will hold 2 pairs of boots.

Sand.

Time to sand all your wood. I love my Ryobi hand sander. For cheap sanding pads, I go to Harbor Freight.
Assemble.

Ready to assemble your DIY rolling boot tray! Use wood glue, a nail gun, and 1 1/4″ or 1 1/2″ nails. You are really just making a box here.

I found it helpful to attach all the 1″ X 4″ pieces together, then flip it over, and nail the bottom piece on.

Wood glue helps keep everything tight and secure. This is my favorite kind of wood glue.
Stain.

I used MinWax Dark Walnut stain and a chip brush and rag to wipe.

Pick a stain that matches your decor. White wash may be a fun look!
Add hardware.

Time to make this box look like something! Add your casters to the bottom with 1/2″ wood screws.

Attach the handles to both sides. My handles came with matching screws. If you find handles without screws, use wood screws and paint the tips to match the handles for a clean look.

This project was very easy to make, pretty frugal, and solved our dirty boots at the back door problem. And I think it looks pretty cute! 🙂
