Looking for a budget friendly bedroom makeover for inspiration? We just finished our DIY bedroom makeover and I’m so happy with how it turned out! I’ll share all the details below.

This frugal bedroom makeover project has been on my to do list for a while, and I’m so glad we finally tackled it! I love the way it turned out!

I wanted to simplify and take out all the clutter, so we could have a peaceful and relaxing area. We also went for a more neutral design, which I think feels more relaxing and calming.

I’ll show you what all we did to create this budget friendly bedroom makeover!

Our Budget Friendly Bedroom Makeover

This budget friendly bedroom makeover was so fun to create with Walmart decor, DIY wall art, a gallery wall, frugal bedding, and wall sconces.

We didn’t want to spend a lot of money on this bedroom makeover, so we had to get a little creative and keep things pretty simple.

Even without spending a fortune, I think this project turned out so good and I’m so happy with this space in our home.

Once I get one area just the way I like it in our home, I feel like I need to keep that momentum going and keep working my way through the house. Anyone else? 😉

We worked on this bedroom makeover over the course of a few months to spread out our spending and the work involved. And to give me time to make decisions and find things I liked.

This budget friendly bedroom makeover was so fun to create with Walmart decor, DIY wall art, a gallery wall, frugal bedding, and wall sconces.

Here’s the shopping list and quick links to different areas of this space:

Wall Paint: We kept the paint the same as it was since we love this color. The color is Bonsai in Satin from Valspar.

Bed: The bed was the big investment of this space. We upgraded to a queen and found a great deal on a closeout model from a local mattress store for about $400 for the whole set and frame.

Faux Shiplap Wall: This was a DIY project. You can find our step by step DIY shiplap process here.

Sconce Lamps: We ordered these wall sconce lamps from Amazon.

Bedding: I found the bedding at Home Goods. This is the bed skirt I ordered.

Bench: The bench was a DIY project. I made it similar to this bench and added an upholstered top made from our old memory foam mattress pad.

Nightstands: The nightstands are from Home Goods.

Gallery Wall: I used these cheap frames from Walmart and have a post about the gallery wall project here.

Wall Art: The wall art above the bed I made using the free Canva tool and printing into 16″ X 20″ poster size. I used Walmart frames to frame them.

Shelves: I got these picture ledge shelves from Walmart.

Blanket Throw: I loved this throw blanket so much I bought a second one for our living room!

We purchased these things over the course of a few months, so we didn’t have to spend our whole budget at once and could find the best deals. If we didn’t have to buy a new bed, this would have been a very frugal project!

Our DIY Bedroom Makeover:

We started this project by adding the faux shiplap headboard wall. Since we have the window above our bed, I wanted something that acted as a headboard and an accent wall. A regular headboard seems to make the window seem very out of place.

I love the shiplap wall and the character and texture it adds to this space!

Then, we added in our new nightstands, bed and bedding.

And the wall sconces! I love the character and design they add to the space.

Having the sconces on the wall frees up the space on our nightstands, which is great in this small space.

Then, we decorated the walls with the gallery wall, DIY wall art, and picture ledge shelves.

I love the neutral and clean look of these. It feels very calming and relaxing to me.

I made the DIY wall art above the bed by creating a graphic in the free Canva tool. Then, I had those printed to 16″ x 20″ poster size prints and framed in these frames from Walmart.

These picture ledge frames were a great fit for this small wall space. I love that I can change up my decor easily with these.

The bench was a DIY project and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I couldn’t find a bench I loved for a decent price, so I decided to make my own.

I used scrap wood for the whole project, the old memory foam mattress pad for the cushion, and spent $5 on some fabric.

My upholstery skills could use some work, but for $5, I think it turned out pretty great.

Final Thoughts & Advice:

By purchasing things over the course of a few months and taking on some DIY projects, we were able to complete this project on a small budget.

We did spend more money on the bed, nightstands, and wall sconces. Those are pieces that we will keep for a long time and more investment pieces.

We saved money on the decor and bedding, since those are areas we will likely change more often.

When decorating a space, it’s important to know what things you want to spend more on and what things to save on.

I love the way this space turned out, and I’m so glad we could decorate our bedroom the way we wanted on a budget that worked for us.

If you have a space you want to decorate and makeover, I would start by drawing up a plan and design you want to go for. Then, decide your budget, what things you want to spend more money on and what you want to save money on.

Then, look for the best deals, taking your time to decide and spread out your spending. And don’t be afraid to tackle a DIY!

On to the next project! 🙂
